We safeguard the ecosystem from monopolisation by a handful of closed providers. ## Our Story Dovecot was created in 2002 by Timo Sirainen, a Finnish software engineer, with the goal of building a secure, high-performance, and standards-compliant IMAP and POP3 server for Linux and UNIX systems. Over the years, Dovecot evolved from a personal project into the world’s most widely used mail server, powering over three-quarters of all mail servers globally. ←   ![Dovecot-Pro-logo-web-header](https://www.dovecotpro.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Dovecot-Pro-logo-web-header.png?width=273&height=21&name=Dovecot-Pro-logo-web-header.png) 2002 Dovecot was created in 2002 by Timo Sirainen, a Finnish software engineer, with the goal of building a secure, high-performance, and standards-compliant IMAP and POP3 server for Linux and UNIX systems. 2003 - 2010 Over the years, Dovecot evolved from a personal project into the world’s most widely used mail server, powering over three-quarters of all mail servers globally. 2011 The first commercial Dovecot product was released. 2013 From its early days, Dovecot gained a reputation for its robust security model and efficient architecture. Building on that foundation, we introduced obox — the Dovecot Pro mailbox storage optimized for object storage. 2014 We released Dovecot Pro Full Text Search (FTS), further enhancing performance and scalability for large deployments. 2015 Dovecot was acquired by Open-Xchange, a German software company that develops email and collaboration solutions for open, secure and accessible internet. 2024 Dovecot Pro received a major upgrade with the introduction of the cloud-native Palomar architecture, available exclusively to Pro customers. Today Dovecot continues to combine open standards with enterprise-grade performance and support, powering email infrastructure for organizations around the world. → Team The Dovecot Pro team Dovecot Pro, like the rest of Open-Xchange, operates in a non-hierarchical, cell-based structure that enables fast decision-making and fosters accountability and innovation.
